MARCH 28 - WED. & MARCH 29 - THURS. 2012

WED. - We went to St. Augustine, about 1-1/2 hr. away from Silver Springs. There is another lighthouse there which Richard of course climbed the 219 steps to the look-out on top. This time he received a certificate to prove his climb! He is very proud of that. Florida does take pride in their lighthouses. They are very well maintained & have museums and gift shops also. Richard is fascinated by them. From there we went to St.Augustine Beach, which is like Daytona beach where you can drive your car right onto the beach. The difference is that this beach has a sign posted "soft sand, drive at your own risk". We saw the sign after we already turned onto the beach. We noticed that most of the vehicles were 4-wheel drive, our car has front wheel drive, so we didn't go any farther. Daytona beach has packed sand, easy to drive on. We parked & took our chairs & things by the water. It was already later in the afternoon so the beach wasn't crowded, mostly seniors. Then we started seeing younger people with surf boards coming. We guessed they were coming after school. the waves were pretty high, & they were riding them good. Oh, to be young again!! Richard did his metal detecting & his treasure today was a dime! We noticed that the sun was starting to set, so we packed up because we had the drive back to Silver Springs and the road we took was around Ocala forest, which is not lighted at night, so we didn't want to be on it in the dark. We got back to our RV just as dusk was coming.

THURS. - Well we had a very interesting day today! We woke to find that our toilet had a leak. We were told that there is a maintenance man who does repairs to RV's here in Silver Springs, but that he charges $100 an hour and he works slow. So, Richard decided to give it a try himself. Boy was it a job! He had to drain the water & completely remove the toilet outside to to see what the problem was. He thought that it could be a seal. So he had to go to a hardware several times for parts. Because the toilet leaked, the carpeting in the bathroom got wet, so he had to pull it all up! Again what a messy job! I helped as much as I could. So we cleaned the toilet real good, outside on our picnic table !(we probably have the cleanest toilet here at the campsite!), & I had to sit on it while he was lying on the floor to bolt it in place, we turned the water back on and it started squirting water! He had to unscrew it & take the whole thing out again. He realized there should be an "0" ring, so again he had to go back to the hardware store for it. Well again we got it in place (after poor Richard cut his hand twice & whacked his head - it is very close quarters in that small bathroom) I sat on it again while he had to lay on the floor to reach the bolts. This time it worked - so far no leak! (we are keeping our fingers crossed that it will hold until we get home)
People here at the campsite could not believe that Richard did it by himself. They said that would have been about an $800. job if we had someone do it. Leave it to Richard, there is not much that he can't fix, & he had all the tools he needed with us. We had a fan going all day to dry the wood that was under the carpeting. We will have to make do with a small carpet in there until we get home, then we are going to put new tile in, instead of carpeting. Well after we got everything all cleaned up, we went to the pool here at the campsite to relax. It was already late afternoon, too late to go anywhere. What a day!!

MARCH 27, 2012 - TUES.

Today we toured another lighthouse -Ponce Inlet Lighthouse in Daytona. It is the tallest one in Florida and one of the tallest operating lighthouse in Northern America. It is 203 stairs to the look-out at the top. Of course Richard climbed to the top! I, on the other hand did not - I instead spent that time in the gift store. Richard said it was a fantastic view (see pictures). There were 5 other buildings to see there - about how the lighthouse was restored after the original one fell into the ocean, & about the life of a lighthouse keeper and his family, back in the late 1800's. It really was very interesting. After that we went to Daytona beach, where we are able to drive our car right on the beach. Richard's detector treasurers today are 1 quarter, 1 dime, & 2 pennies, a whole 37 cents! But he does enjoy detecting, so that's what is important. Spring break is pretty much over so the beaches are not as crowded & today we got there later, around 3:00 so we were only charged $3.00 to drive on the beach instead of $6.00. We stayed until around 6 o'clock. It was a great weather day also.

MARCH 25 - SUN. & MARCH 26 - MON., 2012

SUN. - We went to church in the morning - St. Joseph of the forest. When we came back to our campsite, we were told that the site we reserved was now vacant & that we could move into it. So we moved our RV & everything to that site. It is a really nice site with a shade tree. While I was getting everything set up in the RV, (this will be our home for the next mt.) Richard took a bike ride around the campsite. It is a huge campsite over 400 sites. The site includes cable TV & Wi-Fi. Richard wanted to watch a race on TV & there is a shopping mall just down the road, so I went to do some shopping. Later we had supper & played a game of Scrabble (Richard won again) It was a rather quiet day.

MON. - We found out why they asked about the year of our RV. There are new owners of the campsite which is now called an RV"Resort" & they had had problems with people coming in with campers & being loud & messy, so it is now primarily for 55 & older camper's (most of who have newer RVs) The mgr. apologized & told us that the employee who made the comment to us should not have made us feel unwelcome being that we were here last year, & they did not charge us for the two days that we were here earlier than scheduled. So we were o.k. with that! We had to go shopping for supplies & so we did some sight seeing around the area. We saw a park & asked a ranger if they had bike trails, which they did. So we went back to the campsite & put away our groceries & took our bikes to the park. Well we started out on the bike trail which was packed sand, but soon turned to soft sand, which was very, very hard to pedal in, in fact even Richard had to get off his bike & walk it a ways. After about 1 mile, we decided to turn around & go back. It was just too hard to ride. When we got back to our starting point, we noticed a sign warning about black bears in the park!! (see picture) We met another park ranger who told us about a bike trail about 5 miles down the road. So, of course we went to see it & decided to try it out. It was really nice & PAVED! We only went about a mile because we were really tired from the other trail. We got back to our RV had a light supper & played another game of scrabble ( Richard won again) Before this trip is over I am going to win one!!

MARCH 23, 2012 - SATURDAY

After a delicious breakfast send-off Jan made, we left Orlando & headed for Silver Springs. We arrived at Wilderness campsite around 3:00 p.m. When we went to the office to check in, the woman at the desk was registering us & asked what year our RV was. When we said 1991, she looked at us like we had two heads. She said that they don't accept RV's older than 2000 for a month stay! We explained that we stayed here last year without any problem and that Richard made the reservations about a year ago & that the month was already paid for. She found our paperwork and checked her computer & saw that indeed the month was paid for in advance. She said that the person Richard made the telephone reservations with should have asked what year our RV was & that she will point that out to her for future transactions, but of course being that we had already paid, we were welcome!!! We were so angry Richard said to her "so what you are saying is that unless we get a newer RV, we would not be welcome here next year - so I guess we will just take our money elsewhere". She really never answered. It is a very nice RV campsite, but we have never before been "put down" because our motor home is older , and we have stayed at other really nice campsites. Richard is going to talk to the owners some time this month to see if that is really their policy. After that "insult" we were told that the site we reserved is occupied until Sun. so they are assigning us a different site for 1 day , then we can move into the site we wanted because according to their computer, we were not expected to arrive until Mon. I was ready to really "spout off" & then I looked at our paperwork we brought with us & saw that Richard had made the mistake, the computer was right, he just wrote down the wrong date! So after we got the RV secured, we got out our grill & had a cook-out. The people around us are all very friendly even tho we have a "old RV". We will enjoy this month, we feel our money is just as good. But we will not stay here again if we come back this way.

MARCH 22 - THURS & MARCH 23 - FRIDAY, 2012

Thrus. - Yesterday we spent the morning doing daily chores, cleaning the RV, washing clothes, rather I did chores, Richard went for a bike ride, then went to a home depot. In the afternoon Jan & I decided to go to the park district outdoor pool & do some water aerobics. Believe it or not Richard decided to come with us. Jack stayed home to mow the lawn. We did our work-out & Richard joined us in water jogging & he swam some laps. We thought we were going to get some rain while we were there, it looked like rain clouds, but the sun came out & it was warm & sunny. When we came back, I decided I needed a hair cut, which was a huge decision for me being that the same gal has cut my hair for the past 30 years! So Richard took me to a nearby mall where Jan said was a salon. I was nervous, but I figured if I didn't like it, no one knew me here anyway & it would grow back by the time we got home. Actually the girl that cut it did a good job, I was pleased. I called Richard to come pick me up - he was browsing the mall stores while I was in the salon, I saw him coming, so I walked out to the street & lo & behold he drove right past me! I thought he was playing a joke on me, like pretending that he didn't recognize me with my new do, & was going to back up, but he kept on going! I wondered where the heck he was going so I called him & my goodness, he really did not see me! We had a good laugh over that. We had a cook-out for supper & then played spades. Richard & Jack challenged us gals because we beat them the other night. Well they got their male egos back because they won.

FRIDAY -Today is our last day at Orlando, so Jack & Jan took us to Cocoa Beach, which is about 45 min. from their house. We had a great day there. Weather was beautiful & sunny. The water was a little chilly at first, but then was nice. The waves were pretty fast, but swimming was permitted & lifeguards were there. The beach was pretty crowded for a week day because the schools here are on spring break. Richard did his metal detector and found several bottle caps, a key, 25 cents & a men's watch which was in very good condition! It was not sand packed and looked new. We think someone must have lost it within the last day or so. He said it was not very deep in the sand. We stopped at a Steak & Shake on the way home for fish dinners being Fri. They have a good fish platter. We were all pretty beat after a day in the sun & water, so we called it a an early night.I just love the beach, if we lived near one I would be there often. Tomorrow we leave here for Silver Springs campsite where we will be for the next month. It is about 3 hours from Orlando.

March 20, Tues & March 21, Wed. , 2012

Haven't written for a few days - having some computer problems. Hopefully it is fixed. Tues was a kinda laid-back day. Jack & Richard went jet-skiing on the lake. I went with Jan for her water aerobics class. When we got to the pool (an outside pool), the lowest end where the class was,was 5', it would have been over my head! The instructor said I could wear a belt float, but then I couldn't touch bottom. ( everyone else in the class was taller than me) So instead I went to the other end of the pool which was just 4' & did my own aerobics while the class was going on. It was a warm sunny day & the water was refreshing. After that Jan had to make a return at a department store, but we didn't bring a change of clothes and we were in our bathing suits & cover-up's. I didn't want to go in, but Jan said these people don't know us & we will never see them again, so I thought --- what the heck, & went in. When we came back, we went for a boat ride on the lake, this time I was very careful getting out of the boat!

Wed. - We went to Jack & Jan's daughter's house. She lives in Clermont, FL, which is about a 45 min ride. It was drizzling rain on & off most of the morning. but cleared by afternoon. Jacey (their daug) made arrangements for us to play mini-golf at Disney World, ( for free) which is on the way to her house. Her friend works there. We decided that loser would treat for ice cream the next time we went for a treat. Guess who lost???? Yep, it was me! But we had fun playing. We had a nice time at Jacey's.They have 4 kids, 3 boys, Zane 16, Morgan,14 & Cade 12, and 1 girl, Jenna, 9. They have a lot of land where they live & a swamp right across from their back yard. Last year they found an alligator in the swamp & had to call & have it removed,it got one of their puppys. The boys took Richard & Jack fishing somewhere on the other side of the swamp. Morgan, one of the boys caught a large "mud fish" (will post a picture later), but they threw it back in the water. They had a gag birthday gift for Richard, a visor hat with hair, (see picture) it was really funny, it actually looked like hair on his head! We had a nice time there & didn't get back to Orlando until about midnight - way past Richard's bed time.

MARCH 19, 2012 - MONDAY

Happy Birthday to Richard! We started the day by going to a huge (really huge) flea market that Jack & Jan's grandson works at. It was in Webster, FL about 1-1/2 hours away.We spent the afternoon there. A lot of walking!! In fact I got Richard a pedometer for his birthday & he clocked 11, 388 steps today! Then we went out to supper to celebrate Richard's special day. He wanted liver & onions, so Jan called around to find a restaurant that served it. We went to "TOO JAYS" it was a restaurant/deli on the order of "The Corner Bakery" - really good food. Soup& salad was served first & wouldn't you know it, I spilled my soup all down my blouse. (lake water yesterday & soup today; my clothes are getting a work out!) I feel like a klutz! Anyway, Richard received a cute happy birthday text picture from Matthew, Zachary, Tony & Jasper & many birthday wishes on the computer, so he enjoyed his day, & thanks everyone.

MARCH 18, 2012 - SUNDAY

Being Sunday, we started the day by going to church with Jack & Jan. Then Richard & Jack wanted to watch a race on TV, so Jan and I went to a Barnes & Noble because I was having a problem with my Nook. In the afternoon we went to tour a museum from the Viet Nam War.( see pictures) The guide was a retired Army officer who served in the war. He explained a lot of items there with the stories behind them. He was a wealth of knowledge and the stories were very interesting. Then we came back & went for a boat ride on the lake, it was a hot day, so the breeze on the lake felt good. As we were coming back to the dock, I went to get out of the boat & the boat moved and yep---- I fell right on my butt in the water, luckily we were in shallow water. Thank goodness Richard didn't have the camera with him otherwise there would be a picture of me posted here. Anyway Jan said I did go down gracefully! After I changed my clothes, because they were soaked, we had supper. Later we went out for ice cream. We came back & played a board game of mine called Logo. I really like the game, but nobody else did, but we had a lot of laughs playing it. Then we heard what sounded like 2 owls, so the three of them got flashlights & went out in the back yard to see if they could see them. I of course did not go, I won't walk out by the lake at night because of the geckos, even tho Jack said they rarely come out at night - It would be my luck that they might decided to go for a night stroll!!
(By the way they didn't see the owls)
